Namatjira Drive is a spectacular 140 km sealed loop off Larapinta Drive in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering an intimate encounter with the rugged heart of Central Australia. Named after the celebrated Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira, whose watercolours captured the fiery ochres and ghost gums of this landscape, the drive winds through ancient gorges, permanent waterholes, and sweeping spinifex plains. It's a self-drive journey that rewards with solitude, birdlife, and some of the most photogenic outback scenery in the Northern Territory.
Highlights & What to See
- Ochre Pits: A sacred Aboriginal site where layers of ochre in shades of rust, cream, and purple have been mined for thousands of years. The colours are mesmerising in the late afternoon light.
- Ormiston Gorge: A stunning quartzite gorge with a permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim. The 7.5 km Pound Walk offers panoramic views of the surrounding ranges.
- Glen Helen Gorge: This deep gorge holds a permanent waterhole that reflects the towering red cliffs. It's a prime spot for birdwatching, especially at sunrise.
- Redbank Gorge: A narrow, dramatic cleft in the range. The walk-in is easy, and the waterhole is a cool escape. For the adventurous, the Mount Sonder walk starts here.
- Serpentine Gorge: A short walk leads to a lookout over a serpentine waterhole. The calm waters and high cliffs create a serene atmosphere.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: One of the most popular swimming holes, with deep, clear water surrounded by red rock. A picnic spot with basic facilities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to drive the entire loop, stopping at each gorge and walk. To truly absorb the landscape, consider camping overnight at one of the designated campgrounds (e.g., Ormiston Gorge or Glen Helen). If you're tight on time, focus on the eastern section from Alice Springs to Ellery Creek and Ormiston Gorge for a half-day outing. The drive is sealed but requires caution for wildlife and occasional road trains.
