Larapinta Drive
Larapinta Drive is the quintessential red-centre road trip, slicing through the West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs. This sealed highway offers jaw-dropping escarpments, ochre gorges, and ancient waterholes, all within easy reach of town. It's the perfect introduction to the raw beauty of Central Australia, with plenty of walks, lookouts, and cultural sites along the way.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the ranges, home to black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn and dusk. The easy walk along a sandy creek bed is a must.
- Standley Chasm – A sheer quartzite chasm that glows fiery orange when the sun hits at midday. The short walk is packed with sensory punch.
- Ochre Pits – Natural pits of coloured ochre used by Arrernte people for ceremony and trade. A fascinating cultural stop with interpretive signs.
- Ormiston Gorge – One of the most spectacular gorges, with a permanent waterhole, ghost gums, and the challenging but rewarding Ormiston Pound Walk.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A serene waterhole at the western end of the drive, perfect for a swim or picnic with views over the ranges.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A popular swimming spot with a huge, deep waterhole surrounded by red cliffs. Great for a refreshing dip after a hike.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can comfortably drive the entire 130 km from Alice Springs to Glen Helen in half a day, but to fully appreciate the gorges and do a few short walks, plan a full day. For a more immersive experience, spend two days: one for the eastern highlights (Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ochre Pits) and another for the western end (Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen). Overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camp at Ormiston Gorge.
