Larapinta Drive

Larapinta Drive is the quintessential red-centre road trip, slicing through the West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs. This sealed highway offers jaw-dropping escarpments, ochre gorges, and ancient waterholes, all within easy reach of town. It's the perfect introduction to the raw beauty of Central Australia, with plenty of walks, lookouts, and cultural sites along the way.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can comfortably drive the entire 130 km from Alice Springs to Glen Helen in half a day, but to fully appreciate the gorges and do a few short walks, plan a full day. For a more immersive experience, spend two days: one for the eastern highlights (Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ochre Pits) and another for the western end (Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen). Overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camp at Ormiston Gorge.
