Glen Helen Gorge is a dramatic chasm carved through red quartzite cliffs on the western edge of the West MacDonnell Ranges. The gorge is a classic outback scene: sheer rust-coloured walls, a permanent waterhole, and the distant hum of the desert. It's a favourite stop for self-drivers on the Larapinta Trail or the Red Centre Way, offering a cool dip on a hot day and some of the most photogenic sunset colours in the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours, including the short walk and a swim. If you're hiking a section of the Larapinta Trail or want to linger for sunset photography, plan for half a day. The gorge is an easy stop on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Kings Canyon or Uluru.
