Glen Helen Gorge is a dramatic chasm carved through red quartzite cliffs on the western edge of the West MacDonnell Ranges. The gorge is a classic outback scene: sheer rust-coloured walls, a permanent waterhole, and the distant hum of the desert. It's a favourite stop for self-drivers on the Larapinta Trail or the Red Centre Way, offering a cool dip on a hot day and some of the most photogenic sunset colours in the region.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Walk – A short 15-minute walk leads to the main waterhole; continue along the cliff edge for panoramic views of the gorge and surrounding ranges.
- Swimming at the Waterhole – The permanent waterhole is a refreshing spot for a swim (check local conditions for safety).
- Sunset Views – The west-facing cliffs catch brilliant orange and red hues as the sun drops behind the range.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies and a variety of desert birds, especially around the waterhole.
- Larapinta Trail Section – Glen Helen is a key access point for the famous trail; even a short day walk along the trail gives a taste of the rugged landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours, including the short walk and a swim. If you're hiking a section of the Larapinta Trail or want to linger for sunset photography, plan for half a day. The gorge is an easy stop on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Kings Canyon or Uluru.
