Serpentine Gorge is a narrow, dramatic chasm carved through the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 85 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The sheer walls glow in the late afternoon light, and a short walk leads to a permanent waterhole that reflects the sky like a desert mirror. It’s a quieter alternative to nearby gorges, offering a more intimate encounter with the ancient landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Serpentine Gorge Walk – a 1.2 km return trail that follows a dry creek bed into the gorge, ending at a deep, shaded waterhole. The contrast of red rock, green river red gums, and blue water is stunning.
- Lookout – a short, steep scramble near the car park rewards you with panoramic views over the gorge and the surrounding ranges, especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, zebra finches, and peregrine falcons that nest on the cliffs.
- Geology – the gorge exposes the ancient Heavitree Quartzite, over 800 million years old, with spectacular folding visible in the rock walls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here. The walk itself takes about 30–45 minutes, but allow extra time to sit by the waterhole, explore the lookout, and absorb the stillness. It pairs perfectly with a half-day drive from Alice Springs or as a quick stop on a longer West MacDonnell Ranges itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ochre Pits – a 10-minute drive east, where ancient ochre deposits create a natural colour palette used by Arrernte people for thousands of years.
- Standley Chasm – a deeper, narrower chasm that’s best visited at midday when sunlight floods the floor; about 20 minutes east.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – a popular swimming spot with a large permanent waterhole and a 2 km loop walk; 15 minutes west.
- Ormiston Gorge – the crown jewel of the West MacDonnells, with a stunning waterhole, ghost gum groves, and the 7.5 km Ormiston Pound Walk; 25 minutes further west.
- Redbank Gorge – a remote, narrow gorge that requires a 4WD to access; ideal for adventurous hikers and those seeking solitude.
