Macleod is a tiny, remote homestead on the edge of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering a genuine outback experience for those venturing beyond Alice Springs. Surrounded by ochre cliffs and spinifex plains, this working station provides a rare glimpse into Central Australian pastoral life and serves as a gateway to the region's dramatic gorges and waterholes.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge – A stunning chasm with a permanent waterhole, perfect for a swim after a walk along the gorge rim or through the pound.
- Glen Helen Gorge – Where the Finke River cuts through the ranges; sunrise and sunset paint the cliffs in fiery hues.
- Redbank Gorge – A narrow, deep cleft offering a challenging but rewarding walk to a natural pool; bring a torch for the final section.
- Mount Sonder Lookout – Catch sunrise from this iconic peak (the fourth highest in the NT) for panoramic views over the West MacDonnells.
- Macleod Homestead – The historic station buildings and the chance to chat with locals about life on the land.
- Finke River Valley – Explore the ancient riverbed, one of the world's oldest drainage systems, with striking desert oak woodlands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to explore the gorges and do a couple of walks. If you're keen on hiking Mount Sonder or the Larapinta Trail section, add an extra day. Most visitors base themselves at the nearby Glen Helen Resort or camp at Ormiston Gorge, using Macleod as a quiet stopover. Pace your drives—roads are unsealed in parts and require a 4WD after rain.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The regional hub, 130 km east, with the Desert Park, Telegraph Station, and excellent Aboriginal art galleries.
- West MacDonnell National Park – A chain of gorges and waterholes stretching west; combine with stops at Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ellery Creek Big Hole.
- Tjoritja / West MacDonnell Ranges – The entire range offers endless hiking and photography opportunities, especially along the Larapinta Trail.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A spectacular sandstone canyon about 200 km southwest, easily done as a day trip from Macleod area.
- Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park) – A lush oasis of red cabbage palms, accessible by 4WD, about 140 km southwest.
