Macleod is a tiny, remote homestead on the edge of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering a genuine outback experience for those venturing beyond Alice Springs. Surrounded by ochre cliffs and spinifex plains, this working station provides a rare glimpse into Central Australian pastoral life and serves as a gateway to the region's dramatic gorges and waterholes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least two full days to explore the gorges and do a couple of walks. If you're keen on hiking Mount Sonder or the Larapinta Trail section, add an extra day. Most visitors base themselves at the nearby Glen Helen Resort or camp at Ormiston Gorge, using Macleod as a quiet stopover. Pace your drives—roads are unsealed in parts and require a 4WD after rain.
