Deep in the red heart of Australia, Palm Valley is a secret oasis that feels worlds away from the rust-red desert surrounding it. Part of the Finke Gorge National Park, this ancient landscape shelters a rare and fragile ecosystem of red cabbage palms (Livistona mariae), found nowhere else on Earth. The 4WD track to the valley is an adventure in itself, winding through sculpted sandstone and dry riverbeds, but the reward is a lush, palm-fringed gorge that has been a sacred site for the Arrernte people for millennia. This is a place to walk quietly, listen to the breeze rustle through fan-shaped fronds, and feel the deep, ancient pulse of the land.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke River: One of the world's oldest river systems, often dry but dramatic, carving through the valley's red rock.
- Palm Valley Walk: A gentle 5 km return trail that winds through the palm grove, offering close-up views of the unique cabbage palms and the chance to spot black-footed rock wallabies.
- Kalarranga Lookout: A short, steep climb rewards you with panoramic views over the valley's amphitheatre of palms and sandstone cliffs.
- 4WD Adventure: The 22 km unsealed track from Hermannsburg is a thrilling drive through creek crossings and rugged terrain – a proper outback experience.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct: On the way, stop at this former Lutheran mission, where the famous Aboriginal watercolourist Albert Namatjira once lived and worked.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day for Palm Valley, especially if you're driving from Alice Springs (about 130 km, 2 hours). The 4WD track can be slow, so allow at least 3–4 hours for the drive and walks combined. If you want to linger, pack a picnic and spend a few hours exploring the main walking trails. Most visitors make it a day trip, but those with a camper trailer can stay at the basic Finke Gorge National Park campground (no facilities) for a truly immersive outback night.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- West MacDonnell Ranges: Spectacular gorges and waterholes like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge, perfect for hiking and swimming.
- Kings Canyon: A stunning sandstone canyon in Watarrka National Park, about 3 hours' drive west, with the iconic Rim Walk.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: The ultimate Red Centre experience, 4.5 hours' drive south-west, with the mighty monolith and the domes of Kata Tjuta.
- Chambers Pillar: A dramatic sandstone pillar rising from the desert, accessible by 4WD and rich in explorer history.
