Mount Sonder (also known as Rwetyepme) is the fourth-highest peak in the Northern Territory and a centrepiece of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Its iconic double-humped silhouette is best appreciated from the Larapinta Trail, which traverses its flanks. For hikers and nature lovers, this is a quintessential Red Centre experience — raw, ancient, and utterly silent under vast desert skies.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunrise from the summit — the classic payoff after a pre-dawn start: the West Macs glow ochre and gold as the sun spills across the Simpson Desert. Bring a headlamp and warm layers.
- Larapinta Trail section 10 — this challenging 15.8 km (one-way) route from Redbank Gorge to the summit is the most direct way up. It’s steep in places but rewards with 360-degree views and a chance to spot black-footed rock-wallabies.
- Redbank Gorge — a deep, narrow chasm filled with cool, permanent water. A swim here after the hike is blissful; the gorge’s red walls are a photographer’s dream in late afternoon light.
- Stargazing — Mount Sonder is far from any light pollution. On a clear night, the Milky Way arcs overhead with startling clarity. Many hikers camp at the summit or nearby to soak it in.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle Mount Sonder as a full-day hike (10–12 hours return) from Redbank Gorge, starting well before dawn to reach the summit for sunrise. If you’re not up for the full trek, a half-day can be spent exploring Redbank Gorge and the lower slopes. For Larapinta Trail thru-hikers, it’s a must-do side trip or overnight camp. Budget one full day for the summit attempt; add a second if you want to explore the gorge or combine with nearby walks.
