Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre carved into the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the most dramatic and accessible outback scenery in the Red Centre. A permanent waterhole, shaded by ghost gums and flanked by towering cliffs, makes this a perfect spot for a swim, a picnic, or a walk into the heart of the ancient landscape. The gorge is a haven for birdlife and wallabies, and its quiet beauty provides a genuine outback experience without the crowds of more famous sites.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A spectacular 7.5 km loop that climbs over the gorge rim and descends into the vast, flat pound, offering panoramic views of the surrounding ranges and the chance to spot euros (wallabies) and birds.
- Gorge Walk – A shorter, easier 2 km return trail along the creek bed to the main waterhole, ideal for a refreshing dip or just soaking up the serene atmosphere.
- Swimming at the waterhole – The permanent waterhole is one of the few places in the Red Centre where you can swim; the cool, clear water is a welcome relief on a hot day.
- Birdwatching and wildlife – Keep an eye out for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and the rare black-footed rock-wallaby among the river red gums and spinifex.
- Sunset views – The gorge walls glow fiery red and orange as the sun dips below the range, making it a magical time for photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend around 2 to 3 hours here, which allows time for the Gorge Walk and a swim or picnic. If you’re keen on the full Ormiston Pound Walk, budget at least 3.5 to 4 hours. The gorge is a perfect half-day escape from Alice Springs, so combine it with other West MacDonnell sites for a full day of exploration. Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light.
