Living Desert Sculptures

Rising from the red dirt of the Central Australian desert, the Living Desert Sculptures are a stunning open-air gallery that blends art, culture, and landscape. Perched on a rocky hill near Alice Springs, this collection of 12 sandstone sculptures was created by local and international artists during a symposium in 1993. The walk to the summit rewards you with panoramic views over the MacDonnell Ranges and the vast desert beyond—especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the changing light transforms the stone forms.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours, ideally timed around sunrise or sunset when the light is best. The walk is moderately steep but short, so you can comfortably combine it with a morning or afternoon exploring Alice Springs. For photographers, arriving 30 minutes before sunrise gives you time to set up and watch the colours shift over the landscape.
