West Macdonnell Ranges

Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, ochre gorges, and permanent waterholes that pulse with life. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible: a series of deep chasms, Aboriginal rock-art sites, and lookout points that reward even a short detour with immense, silent beauty. The drive along Larapinta Drive (part of the Red Centre Way) feels like unrolling a geological scroll, each turn revealing a new palette of red, orange, and purple stone.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors tackle the West MacDonnells as a day trip from Alice Springs, but to truly soak it in, plan two days. On day one, drive out to Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ochre Pits, returning via the same road. On day two, push west to Ellery Creek, Serpentine Gorge, and Glen Helen, perhaps continuing to the standalone Mount Sonder lookout. Camping at Glen Helen or at the designated bush camps along the way lets you catch the golden light of sunrise and sunset.
