Stretching west from Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, ochre gorges, and permanent waterholes that pulse with life. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible: a series of deep chasms, Aboriginal rock-art sites, and lookout points that reward even a short detour with immense, silent beauty. The drive along Larapinta Drive (part of the Red Centre Way) feels like unrolling a geological scroll, each turn revealing a new palette of red, orange, and purple stone.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A sheer-walled gap with a permanent waterhole; walk the short Ghost Gum trail to see ancient river red gums and spot black-footed rock wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow chasm where the walls close in to just a few metres wide; visit around midday when the sun floods the floor with fiery light. It's on private land (Iwupataka), so a small entry fee applies.
- Ochre Pits – A sacred Aboriginal quarry where ochres of white, yellow, and red were mined for trade and ceremony. The layered cliffs are a vivid lesson in geology and culture.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool waterhole surrounded by red dolomite cliffs; perfect for a swim after a bushwalk along the ridge. One of the best swimming spots in the Centre.
- Serpentine Gorge – A twisting gorge with a short climb to a lookout over the Finke River valley. The waterhole here is often home to rare fish species.
- Glen Helen Gorge – The westernmost major gorge, where the Finke River cuts through the range. The resort here offers a cold beer on the verandah with million-dollar views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle the West MacDonnells as a day trip from Alice Springs, but to truly soak it in, plan two days. On day one, drive out to Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ochre Pits, returning via the same road. On day two, push west to Ellery Creek, Serpentine Gorge, and Glen Helen, perhaps continuing to the standalone Mount Sonder lookout. Camping at Glen Helen or at the designated bush camps along the way lets you catch the golden light of sunrise and sunset.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The hub for supplies, Aboriginal art galleries, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum; start or end your West MacDonnell trip here.
- East Macdonnell Ranges – Equally dramatic but less visited; explore Trephina Gorge, N'Dhala Gorge, and Emily Gap for a quieter experience.
- Finke River Valley – Australia's oldest river; 4WD tracks lead to Palm Valley and the ancient cycad groves of the Finke Gorge National Park.
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) – A three-hour drive west; combine the West Macs with the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon for a classic Red Centre itinerary.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Further southwest, but easily added to a longer self-drive loop via the Red Centre Way; allow at least two days for the Rock and the Olgas.
