Katherine, the fourth-largest town in the Northern Territory, serves as a vibrant gateway to the iconic Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) and a rich tapestry of Indigenous culture, outback history, and natural wonders. Set along the banks of the Katherine River, this laid-back outpost offers a genuine taste of Top End life, with a thriving café scene and easy access to some of Australia’s most dramatic landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge – A series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Explore by canoe, cruise, or scenic flight; swim in plunge pools and spot wallabies and birdlife. The 62 km Jatbula Trail is a multi-day hike for serious trekkers.
- Katherine Hot Springs – Natural thermal pools just minutes from town, perfect for a relaxing soak surrounded by tropical vegetation. Ideal for an afternoon cool-down.
- Katherine Outback Heritage Museum – Housed in the original 1926 railway station, this museum showcases pioneer history, Indigenous artifacts, and the region's role in WWII.
- Springvale Homestead – The oldest homestead in the NT (established 1879), offering guided tours, a heritage walk, and a popular outback pub with live music.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park – A tropical limestone cave system 27 km south of town, home to unique wildlife including the rare ghost bat. Guided tours reveal stunning stalactites and stalagmites.
- Indigenous Art & Culture – Visit the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre for local Aboriginal art, or join a cultural tour with the Jawoyn people to learn about bush tucker, rock art, and Dreamtime stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to experience the gorges, hot springs, and a cave tour at a relaxed pace. Arrive early to secure a campsite or book accommodation in advance during the dry season (May–October). Spend the first day on a Nitmiluk cruise or canoe, the second exploring the town’s heritage and hot springs, and the third on a side trip to the caves or a hike. If you’re short on time, a single day can cover a morning gorge cruise and an afternoon at the hot springs and museum.
