Imagine soaking in warm, crystal-clear water while surrounded by lush tropical vegetation — that’s the magic of Katherine Hot Springs. Just a short stroll from the town centre, these natural thermal springs flow into a series of rocky pools along the Katherine River. The water hovers around a blissful 30°C year-round, making it an ideal spot to unwind after exploring the rugged landscapes of the Northern Territory. Locals and travellers alike come here to float, picnic, and watch the sunset paint the paperbark trees gold. It’s free, easy to access, and utterly rejuvenating.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Spring Pool: The largest pool, with smooth rock ledges perfect for lounging. The sandy bottom and gentle current make it feel like a natural spa.
- Upper Pools: Venture a few metres upstream to find smaller, quieter pools with slightly warmer water — ideal for a peaceful soak.
- Katherine River Walk: Follow the riverbank path from the springs to the Katherine Low Level Nature Park, spotting birds and freshwater turtles along the way.
- Sunset Soak: Arrive late afternoon to watch the sky turn fiery orange while you soak; the springs stay open until dusk.
- Picnic Areas: Grassy spots shaded by pandanus palms make for a perfect lunch stop. Bring a book and float the day away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours relaxing in the pools, but you could easily while away a half-day here, especially if you combine it with a picnic and a riverside walk. The springs are accessible 24 hours, so an early-morning dip (before the heat sets in) or a sunset session are both excellent. If you’re on a self-drive itinerary, slot this in as a mid-afternoon refreshment stop between Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine town.
