Deep in the Northern Territory's tropical savannah, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park offers a surprising underground world of limestone caverns, stalactites, and rare wildlife. Just 30 kilometres south of Katherine, these ancient caves are a cool escape from the outback heat and a fascinating detour on a self-drive along the Stuart Highway. Named from the local Jawoyn language meaning 'many stars', the caves are home to unique cave-dwelling creatures and a rich Indigenous history. A guided tour reveals dramatic formations and the eerie beauty of the dark, silent chambers.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Cave Tours: The only way to explore the main cave system, with knowledgeable guides explaining the geology and ecology of the limestone formations and the resident ghost bats.
- Wildlife Watching: Spot orange horseshoe bats, cave-dwelling insects, and, if you're lucky, the rare blind cave eel in the underground pools.
- Nature Walk: The 1.2-kilometre loop through monsoon forest above ground is excellent for birdwatching and seeing native plants like cycads and banyan figs.
- Indigenous Cultural Connection: Learn about the Jawoyn people's relationship with the caves, which feature in their Dreamtime stories as a place of spirits.
- Photography: The dramatic light play at the cave entrance and the intricate stalactite formations make for stunning photos (tripods allowed on tour).
