Mataranka, a tiny outback town in the Northern Territory, is a true oasis in the red dust of the Stuart Highway. Famous for its thermal springs, this is where you come to soak in crystal-clear, 34°C (93°F) waters surrounded by paperbark trees and pandanus palms. It's a slice of paradise that feels a world away from the rugged landscape outside, and a must-stop on any journey between Alice Springs and Darwin.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs – A serene thermal pool where you can float lazily downstream, watching fish and turtles in the gin-clear water. It's less crowded than the main pool and utterly peaceful.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool – The larger, more famous spring, set in Elsey National Park. The water is a constant 34°C and the surrounding palm forest gives it a tropical feel. Perfect for a long, relaxing soak.
- Elsey National Park – Beyond the springs, explore walking trails through monsoon forests and along the Roper River. Keep an eye out for wallabies and birdlife.
- Jalmurark (Rainbow Spring) – A lesser-visited thermal spring with a boardwalk and viewing platform, offering a quieter alternative to the main pools.
- Never Never River – A picturesque spot for a picnic or a short walk, named after the famous novel We of the Never Never, which was set in this region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mataranka is best enjoyed over a full day and overnight. Arrive in the late afternoon to soak in the thermal pools as the sun sets, then camp or stay at one of the nearby lodges. The next morning, take a walk in Elsey National Park before continuing your journey. If you're just passing through, a two-hour stop is enough for a quick dip, but you'll likely want to linger longer.
