Edith Falls, part of the Nitmiluk National Park, is a stunning series of waterfalls and plunge pools about 60 km northeast of Katherine. This is a quieter, more intimate alternative to the popular Katherine Gorge, offering excellent swimming, bushwalking, and birdwatching in a serene outback setting. The main waterfall cascades into a large, deep pool perfect for a refreshing dip, surrounded by paperbark trees and sandstone cliffs.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Plunge Pool: Swim in the large, clear pool at the base of the main falls—one of the best natural swimming holes in the Northern Territory.
- Upper Pool and Cascades: Take the short, steep Leliyn Trail (2.2 km return) to reach the upper pool, where you can swim beneath smaller cascades with panoramic views over the valley.
- Sweetwater Pool: A more remote swimming hole accessible via a 7 km return walk along the Sweetwater Trail, passing through savannah woodlands and offering solitude.
- Birdwatching: Spot rainbow bee-eaters, kingfishers, and whistling kites around the waterholes—bring binoculars for best views.
- Aboriginal Rock Art: Look for ancient Jawoyn art on the sandstone walls near the upper pool, depicting ancestral stories and local wildlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–4 hours) at Edith Falls, which allows time for a swim in the main plunge pool, a walk to the upper pool, and a picnic by the water. If you're keen on hiking to Sweetwater Pool or exploring more of the park, plan for a full day. The falls are best visited in the cooler months (May–September) when the water is clear and the weather pleasant for walking.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
