Bitter Springs is a stunning natural thermal pool in the Northern Territory's Elsey National Park, about 105 km south of Katherine. The crystal-clear, spring-fed water maintains a constant 34°C, making it a perfect year-round swimming spot. Surrounded by monsoon rainforest, the main pool is a deep, transparent blue, with a smaller, more intimate pool nearby. It's a serene, undeveloped oasis — no flashy facilities, just pure nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Bitter Springs, which is plenty of time for a swim and a short walk. If you want to soak longer and enjoy a picnic, budget up to half a day. The springs are best visited early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and the heat. It's a popular stop on the drive between Katherine and Mataranka, so it works well as a midday break.
