Elsey National Park
Elsey National Park, about 370 km south of Darwin near the town of Mataranka, is a lush oasis in the dry Top End. Famous for its crystal-clear thermal springs and the iconic Mataranka Thermal Pool, this park offers a refreshing dip in palm-fringed waters that stay a constant 34°C year-round. It's also steeped in history as the setting for the classic Australian novel We of the Never Never, with the homestead replica adding a cultural layer to your visit.
Highlights & What to See
- Mataranka Thermal Pool: Soak in the warm, clear waters surrounded by paperbark trees and palms – a truly magical spot for a swim at any time of day.
- Bitter Springs: A quieter, equally beautiful thermal spring where you can float along the gentle current in a lush monsoon forest setting.
- Elsey Homestead & Never Never Museum: Visit the replica homestead and museum to learn about the pioneering history and the story behind We of the Never Never.
- Waterloo Station Walk: A short walk through woodlands and along the Roper River, offering birdwatching and a chance to see diverse flora.
- Jalworr-Jalworr (Rainbow Spring) Walk: A 2.5 km loop through monsoon forest and past a smaller thermal spring – keep an eye out for red-winged parrots.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily enjoy the highlights in a half-day, but to fully relax and soak in the springs, plan for a full day. Combine it with a night at the nearby Mataranka Caravan Park or camp in the park itself to experience the springs at sunrise or sunset when they are at their most serene and least crowded.
