Katherine, the fourth-largest town in the Northern Territory, is a gateway to dramatic outback landscapes and Indigenous culture. Straddling the Katherine River, this laid-back frontier town offers a mix of natural wonders, from ancient gorges to thermal springs, and serves as a perfect base for exploring the Top End's rugged interior. With a strong Indigenous heritage and a growing food scene, Katherine rewards travellers who pause to explore beyond the highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) – The star attraction: a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Take a boat cruise, hire a canoe, or hike the Jatbula Trail for breathtaking escarpment views and ancient rock art.
- Katherine Hot Springs – Natural thermal pools just minutes from town, perfect for a relaxing swim surrounded by paperbark trees. Best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park – A limestone cave system with guided tours revealing stalactites, stalagmites, and rare orange horseshoe bats. The tropical forest above is home to diverse birdlife.
- Top Didj & Cultural Experience – An immersive Indigenous experience where you can learn traditional spear-throwing, painting with ochre, and bush tucker uses. Run by local Wardaman guides.
- Katherine Outback Heritage Museum – Housed in a historic 1920s railway station, this museum tells the story of the region's pioneering past and the Overland Telegraph Line.
- Springvale Homestead – One of the NT's oldest homesteads (1879), now a heritage site offering tours and a glimpse into early settler life. Also has a campground and bar.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend 2 to 3 days in Katherine to do justice to the main attractions. Day-trippers from Darwin can see the gorge on a long day, but you'll appreciate an overnight stay to experience the Hot Springs at dusk and take a morning cruise on the gorge. For hikers, the Jatbula Trail requires 4–5 days. A good pace: Day 1 – arrive, visit the Hot Springs and museum; Day 2 – full day at Nitmiluk; Day 3 – Cutta Cutta Caves and a cultural tour before heading south to Mataranka.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Litchfield National Park – 250 km north-west, a stunning park with waterfalls, swimming holes, and magnetic termite mounds – a great alternative to Kakadu for a day trip from Darwin.
- Kakadu National Park – 300 km north, a World Heritage site with incredible wetlands, wildlife, and rock art. Combine Katherine with Kakadu for a classic Top End itinerary.
