Mataranka is a tiny outback town in the Northern Territory that packs a surprising punch. Famous for its crystal-clear thermal springs and lush tropical vegetation, it feels like a desert oasis. The water stays a balmy 34°C year-round, making it the perfect spot for a restorative dip after exploring the nearby Elsey National Park. This is a place where you can truly unwind, surrounded by paperbark trees and the sounds of birds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Mataranka is best enjoyed as a leisurely half-day stop or an overnight stay. If you’re passing through on the Stuart Highway, allow at least 2–3 hours to soak in the thermal pools and have a quick walk. For a more relaxed experience, stay overnight at the Mataranka Homestead or the caravan park – this gives you time to visit both springs and explore the national park the next morning. It’s an easy detour from the highway and a wonderful way to break up a drive between Katherine and Daly Waters.
