Bitter Springs is a stunning natural thermal pool in the Northern Territory's Elsey National Park, about 105 km south of Katherine. The crystal-clear, spring-fed water maintains a constant 34°C, making it a perfect year-round swimming spot. Surrounded by monsoon rainforest, the main pool is a deep, transparent blue, with a smaller, more intimate pool nearby. It's a serene, undeveloped oasis — no flashy facilities, just pure nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Thermal Pool: The large, deep pool is ideal for swimming and floating. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom and the gentle bubbles rising from the spring.
- Smaller Pool: A short walk upstream leads to a more secluded, shallower pool, perfect for a quieter soak.
- Rainforest Walk: A boardwalk meanders through the lush monsoon forest, offering glimpses of birdlife and the spring's source.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for freshwater turtles, fish, and the occasional goanna sunning itself on the rocks.
- Relaxed Picnicking: There are no cafes, so bring a picnic and enjoy lunch at one of the shaded tables near the carpark.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Bitter Springs, which is plenty of time for a swim and a short walk. If you want to soak longer and enjoy a picnic, budget up to half a day. The springs are best visited early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and the heat. It's a popular stop on the drive between Katherine and Mataranka, so it works well as a midday break.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
