About 85 kilometres east of Alice Springs, Trephina Gorge Nature Park is a pocket of the East MacDonnell Ranges that feels both ancient and intimate. Here, the red quartzite cliffs rise above a permanent waterhole, and river red gums cast dappled shade along sandy creek beds. It’s a place for genuine outback immersion — no shops or queues, just the sound of birds and the rustle of spinifex.
Highlights & What to See
- Trephina Gorge itself — a sheer-walled chasm with a permanent waterhole that reflects the cliffs like a mirror. Early morning or late afternoon light paints the rock in deep ochre tones.
- John Hayes Rockhole — a short walk through ghost gums to a series of rock pools that hold water long after the summer rains. Great for birdwatching and a cool dip when the creek is flowing.
- Ridgetop Walk — a 3.5 km loop that climbs onto the plateau for sweeping views over the gorge and the surrounding ranges. Allow an hour and bring water.
- Chain of Ponds Walk — a 2.5 km stroll connecting a series of waterholes, each framed by red cliffs and paperbarks. Ideal for families and photographers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate half a day to Trephina Gorge — arrive early to catch the soft morning light on the cliffs, then tackle the Ridgetop Walk before the heat sets in. If you’re combining it with other East MacDonnell sights, you can comfortably spend two to three hours here, including a picnic by the waterhole. The park has basic camping facilities, so an overnight stay allows for sunset and sunrise walks without the midday sun.
