Emily Gap is a dramatic cleft in the MacDonnell Ranges, just a short drive from Alice Springs. This natural gorge is not only a visually striking landscape of red rock walls and permanent waterholes but also a site of profound cultural significance to the Arrernte people, who know it as Anthwerrke. It’s a place where geology, Aboriginal art, and bush tranquility converge, offering a serene escape from the heat and dust of the Stuart Highway.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for one to two hours to fully appreciate the gorge – half an hour to walk the main track and absorb the art, plus extra time to sit by the waterhole or explore the longer path. It makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon stop from Alice Springs, combined with a visit to nearby Trephina Gorge or the Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park.
