Arltunga Historical Reserve, 110 km east of Alice Springs, is the ghost of a 19th-century gold rush town that once drew hundreds of hopeful miners into the harsh MacDonnell Ranges. Today, the reserve preserves a hauntingly beautiful landscape of stone ruins, old mines, and a dusty cemetery — offering a vivid glimpse into the grit and loneliness of outback life.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the main historic precinct and the battery, but if you have a 4WD and want to venture to the outlying mines, budget a half-day. The reserve is best visited in the cooler months (April–September) — summer heat can be brutal. Morning light is ideal for photography, and the site is quiet even in peak season.
