Arltunga Historical Reserve, 110 km east of Alice Springs, is the ghost of a 19th-century gold rush town that once drew hundreds of hopeful miners into the harsh MacDonnell Ranges. Today, the reserve preserves a hauntingly beautiful landscape of stone ruins, old mines, and a dusty cemetery — offering a vivid glimpse into the grit and loneliness of outback life.
Highlights & What to See
- Government Battery & Stamp Mill: A restored 10-head stamp mill that crushed ore 24/7 during the boom; you can still hear its ghostly clatter in the wind.
- Arltunga Historic Precinct: Wander the stone foundations of the police station, post office, and bakery — each building tells a story of survival in the red centre.
- MacDonnell Range Overlook: A short walk rewards you with sweeping views of the East MacDonnell Ranges, where the gold-bearing quartz reefs lie.
- Old Cemetery: The small, fenced burial ground holds the graves of miners who died of thirst, disease, or violence — a sobering reminder of the frontier.
- 4WD Tracks to Old Mines: Hardy travellers can explore the White Range and Golden Goose mines, where you can peek into dark shafts and see remnants of old machinery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the main historic precinct and the battery, but if you have a 4WD and want to venture to the outlying mines, budget a half-day. The reserve is best visited in the cooler months (April–September) — summer heat can be brutal. Morning light is ideal for photography, and the site is quiet even in peak season.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Emily Gap & Jessie Gap: Two scenic gaps in the East MacDonnells, each with Aboriginal rock art and picnic spots, about 40 km east of Alice Springs.
- Alice Springs Desert Park: Back in Alice, this world-class park showcases desert wildlife and Aboriginal culture — a great way to contextualise the harsh environment the miners faced.
- N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park: A 4WD-only site with over 5,000 rock carvings, 50 km east of Arltunga — combine for a full day of ancient and recent history.
