Katherine is the vibrant gateway to the Top End's most spectacular gorges and outback adventures. Set on the banks of the Katherine River, this friendly town blends a frontier history with a lively arts scene and easy access to Nitmiluk National Park. It's the perfect base for exploring ancient landscapes, cooling off in natural swimming holes, and learning about local Jawoyn culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge – The star attraction: a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Explore by canoe, cruise, or scenic flight; hike the rim walks for breathtaking views; and swim in the lower gorge when the crocodiles aren't about.
- Katherine Hot Springs – A series of crystal-clear, thermally heated pools just a short walk from town. Perfect for a relaxing dip after a day of hiking – the water stays a balmy 28–32°C year-round.
- Katherine Outback Heritage Museum – Housed in the historic 1926 railway station, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's pioneering past, with vintage machinery, Indigenous artefacts, and old photographs.
- Top Didj Cultural Experience – An immersive half-day workshop where you can learn about Jawoyn culture, try your hand at spear throwing, and paint your own didgeridoo under the guidance of local artists.
- Springvale Homestead – One of the Northern Territory's oldest pastoral properties, now a heritage-listed homestead offering guided tours, a restaurant, and a chance to see the original outbuildings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days in Katherine. Day one: explore Nitmiluk Gorge – take an early morning canoe trip or a boat cruise, then hike the Baruwei Lookout Loop. Day two: relax at the Hot Springs, visit the museum, and join a cultural tour. If you have a third day, drive to Edith Falls for a swim or head further south to Mataranka's thermal pools.
