Mataranka
Mataranka is a tiny outback settlement in the Northern Territory that punches well above its weight in natural beauty. Famous for its thermal springs and palm-fringed waterholes, this is a place to soak – literally – in the landscape. The local Jawoyn people have long cherished these waters, and today travellers come to float in the warm, crystal-clear pools surrounded by paperbark trees and red earth. It’s an essential stop on the drive between Katherine and Daly Waters, offering a serene contrast to the dusty plains.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs – A thermal spring with constant 34°C water, perfect for a lazy float downstream. The clarity is astonishing, and the pandanus palms create a tropical vibe.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool – Located in Elsey National Park, this larger pool is fed by the same spring. Surrounded by monsoon forest, it’s a dreamy spot for a swim any time of day.
- Elsey National Park – Beyond the springs, the park offers walks through woodlands and along the Roper River. Keep an eye out for wallabies and birdlife.
- Mataranka Homestead – A historic station that inspired Jeannie Gunn’s book We of the Never Never. Grab a cold drink on the verandah and soak up the outback atmosphere.
- Jalbuya Lookout – A short walk to a vantage point over the Roper River floodplain, especially beautiful at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves here for one night, allowing a full afternoon and morning to enjoy the springs and a short walk. If you’re in a rush, a couple of hours for a swim and a picnic is enough, but the water is so inviting you’ll want to stay longer. For a deeper experience, add a second day to explore more of Elsey National Park or visit the historic Daly Waters Pub an hour north.
