Edith Falls, part of the Nitmiluk National Park, is a stunning oasis in the arid Top End of Australia. A series of cascading waterfalls and plunge pools set among sandstone escarpments and savannah woodlands, it offers a refreshing escape from the heat. The main pool is perfect for swimming, and the surrounding walking trails provide breathtaking views of the falls and the Katherine River system.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming at the main pool: The large, deep pool at the base of the falls is ideal for a cool dip, with the cascading water creating a natural spa-like experience.
- Upper pools and cascades: A short but moderately steep walk leads to a series of smaller, less crowded pools and cascades, offering a more secluded swimming experience.
- Leliyn Trail: A 2.6 km loop walk that climbs up the escarpment for panoramic views of the falls, the Katherine Gorge, and the surrounding bushland. Best done early morning or late afternoon.
- Birdwatching: The area is home to a variety of bird species, including rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and white-gaped honeyeaters, especially near the water.
- Aboriginal rock art: Look for ancient rock art sites along the Leliyn Trail, which tell stories of the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of the land.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is sufficient to enjoy the main swimming area and complete the Leliyn Trail. If you have more time, consider spending a full day to explore the upper pools and relax by the water. The falls are best visited in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds. For a peaceful experience, visit during the week or outside school holidays.
