Saltwater National Park is a serene coastal reserve on the southern side of Port Stephens, offering a wild and windswept escape into nature. This lesser-known gem features dramatic sea cliffs, secluded beaches, and a rich Aboriginal heritage. It's a perfect spot for a peaceful walk, birdwatching, or simply soaking in the raw beauty of the New South Wales coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Wreck Beach: A remote stretch of sand accessible via a scenic coastal walk, named for the shipwreck remains visible at low tide. Look for the haunting iron skeleton of the SS Saturn.
- Boulders Beach: A stunning cove with enormous rock formations and a small sandy patch, ideal for a quiet picnic or photography.
- Coastal Walking Track: A 2.5 km loop that follows the cliff tops, offering breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea and the chance to spot whales during migration season (May–November).
- Aboriginal Heritage: The park is part of the Worimi people's traditional lands. Look for middens and scar trees, and respect these cultural sites.
- Birdlife: Keep an eye out for sea eagles, ospreys, and a variety of shorebirds along the coast and in the heathland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is sufficient to explore the park's main highlights. Start with the coastal walk (allow 1–1.5 hours), then spend time relaxing on Boulders Beach or exploring Wreck Beach at low tide. Combine with a morning or afternoon visit to nearby Anna Bay or Nelson Bay for a full day of coastal exploration.
