Rising dramatically from the ancient sandstone of the Jamison Valley, the Three Sisters are the Blue Mountains' most iconic natural landmark. This trio of weathered rock pillars, named Meehni, Wimlah, and Gunnedoo in Aboriginal legend, commands a view that stops every traveller in their tracks. Whether you catch them at dawn when they glow ochre, or under a full moon when they seem to float above the eucalypts, this is a sight you'll carry home.
Highlights & What to See
- Echo Point Lookout: The classic vantage point. Arrive early (before 9am) to beat the tour buses and watch the sun set the Sisters alight. The viewing platform offers wheelchair-accessible panoramas.
- The Giant Stairway: Descend more than 800 steps into the valley for a jaw-achingly steep but unforgettable walk that brings you face to face with the base of the Sisters. Allow 90 minutes one way (return via the Scenic Railway if your knees protest).
- Scenic World: Just a 10-minute walk from Echo Point, this complex offers the Scenic Railway (the steepest passenger railway in the world), a cableway, and a skyway that glides over the valley. It's a thrilling, less-sweaty alternative for valley views.
- Aboriginal Cultural Experiences: Join a guided walk with a local Darug guide to hear the Dreamtime story of the Three Sisters and learn about bush foods and traditional land management. These tours often depart from Echo Point.
- Sunset at the Three Sisters: The rock faces catch the last light in a spectacular display. The nearby Sublime Point Lookout offers a quieter alternative with equally stirring views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Echo Point and the immediate lookouts, which is enough for photos and a short walk. For a fuller experience, dedicate half a day: start with the Giant Stairway descent (allow 2–3 hours round trip if you take the Scenic Railway back up), then explore Scenic World and grab a coffee in Katoomba. If you're a keen hiker, a full day lets you connect to the Federal Pass trail and explore the valley floor.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katoomba: The bustling mountain town is just a 5-minute drive from the Sisters. Browse its art-deco shops, eat at the iconic Carrington Hotel, or visit the Norman Lindsay Gallery.
- Leura: A prettier, leafier neighbour with excellent gardens (Leura Gardens Festival in spring), boutique homewares stores, and the sublime Leura Cascades picnic area.
- Wentworth Falls: A 10-minute drive south, this village offers a series of stunning lookouts and the Wentworth Falls track, where you can stand beside a plunging 187-metre waterfall.
- Blackheath: For those who love a longer walk, the Grand Canyon track in Blackheath is a spectacular loop through lush fern gullies and past cascades. The town also has a great weekend produce market.
- Jenolan Caves: About an hour's drive west, these limestone caves are some of the oldest in the world. Combine a morning at the Sisters with an afternoon underground tour for a memorable contrast.
