Perched on the edge of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, Katoomba is the region's most dramatic and visitor-friendly hub. Its cool-climate air, misty valleys, and sheer sandstone cliffs have drawn travellers for over a century. Today, the town blends rugged outdoor adventure with a quirky arts scene, excellent cafés, and heritage accommodation — making it an essential stop on any New South Wales road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters lookout – the iconic rock formation at Echo Point, best seen at sunrise or sunset when the low sun paints the cliffs orange.
- Scenic World – a thrilling complex with the steepest passenger railway in the world, a glass-floored cable car, and a boardwalk through ancient rainforest.
- Giant Stairway – a heart-pumping descent of nearly 1000 steps into the Jamison Valley; not for the faint of leg, but the views are unmatched.
- Katoomba Falls – a multi-tiered cascade that plunges into the valley, easily accessed via a short walk from the Scenic World area.
- Everglades Historic House & Gardens – a serene Art Deco estate with formal gardens and sweeping valley vistas, perfect for a quiet afternoon.
- Leura Cascades – a short drive away in neighbouring Leura, this series of gentle waterfalls and picnic spots offers a more tranquil bushwalk.
Suggested Time to Spend
A minimum of two full days is recommended to experience Katoomba's essential sights without rushing. Day one can cover the Three Sisters, a walk along the cliff top, and Scenic World. Day two allows for a longer bushwalk (such as the Federal Pass to Katoomba Falls) and time to explore the town's vintage shops and cafés. If you're passing through on a road trip, even a half-day will let you see the Three Sisters and ride the Scenic Railway, but you'll leave wanting more.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Leura – a charming village with boutique shops, excellent gardens, and the sublime Leura Cascades.
- Wentworth Falls – home to a spectacular waterfall and the start of the National Pass walk, one of the Blue Mountains' best day hikes.
- Blackheath – a quieter mountain town with dramatic lookouts (Govetts Leap) and the start of the Grand Canyon walk.
- Jenolan Caves – a world-class limestone cave system about 90 minutes' drive west, with guided tours through illuminated chambers.
- Mount Victoria – the highest town in the Blue Mountains, offering historic pubs and the dramatic Victoria Pass lookout.
