Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is a multi-day hiking experience that plunges you into one of Australia’s most pristine coastal wilderness areas. This 66-kilometre trail, opened in 2016, winds through the rugged southwestern corner of Kangaroo Island, offering dramatic sea cliffs, dense mallee scrub, and encounters with unique wildlife like sea lions, koalas, and kangaroos. It’s a self-guided, hut-to-hut walk that feels like a true escape – no crowds, just the roar of the Southern Ocean and the scent of eucalyptus.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most hikers complete the trail in 5 days and 4 nights at a comfortable pace. This allows time to fully absorb the landscapes, take photos, and enjoy the huts’ basic but cosy accommodations. You can also do a shorter 3-day version by skipping some sections, but the full experience is best. Plan to start early each day – the midday sun can be intense – and always carry plenty of water and sun protection. The trail is well-marked, so navigation is straightforward.
