On Kangaroo Island’s rugged south coast, Vivonne Bay is a vision of postcard-perfect Australian coastline: a sweeping crescent of bone-white sand, turquoise waters, and a backdrop of low scrubby dunes. The bay consistently ranks among Australia’s best beaches, yet it rarely feels crowded — especially if you arrive early or outside peak season. This is a place for pure coastal immersion, from swimming and fishing to walking the wild headlands.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Vivonne Bay works well as a half-day stop or a full-day beach escape. If you’re driving the island’s southern loop, allow 2–3 hours to swim, walk the beach, and grab a bite at the nearby Vivonne Bay General Store (famous for its fish and chips and homemade pies). For a more relaxed pace, pack a picnic and spend the entire afternoon; the light in late afternoon is stunning for photography. Overnight stays are limited — most visitors base themselves in Kingscote or American River and visit as a day trip.
