Little Sahara
Little Sahara is a surprising expanse of white sand dunes rising from the lush green landscape of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. This natural phenomenon offers a striking contrast to the island's rugged coastline and bushland, creating a playground for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Sandboarding & Tobogganing: The main draw here is sliding down the towering dunes on sandboards or toboggans, which you can hire from nearby Vivonne Bay or bring your own. The soft, fine sand makes for a smooth ride.
- Walking & Photography: Climb to the top of the highest dunes for panoramic views over the surrounding bushland and the Southern Ocean. The early morning or late afternoon light casts dramatic shadows across the rippled sand.
- Flora & Fauna: Despite the arid appearance, the dunes are home to unique vegetation like the coast beard-heath and native animals such as the Kangaroo Island kangaroo. Look out for echidnas and goannas along the edges.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, Little Sahara is an excellent spot for stargazing after sunset. The dunes provide a natural amphitheater for lying back and watching the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Little Sahara, which is enough for a few runs down the dunes and a walk to the top. If you're keen on sandboarding or want to explore the surrounding trails on foot, allow up to half a day. The site is not huge, so it's best combined with other attractions on the island.
