Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is a multi-day hiking experience that plunges you into one of Australia’s most pristine coastal wilderness areas. This 66-kilometre trail, opened in 2016, winds through the rugged southwestern corner of Kangaroo Island, offering dramatic sea cliffs, dense mallee scrub, and encounters with unique wildlife like sea lions, koalas, and kangaroos. It’s a self-guided, hut-to-hut walk that feels like a true escape – no crowds, just the roar of the Southern Ocean and the scent of eucalyptus.
Highlights & What to See
- Remarkable Rocks – Start your journey at these astonishing granite boulders, sculpted by wind and sea into surreal shapes. The light at sunrise is unforgettable.
- Flinders Chase National Park – The trail’s heart, where you’ll hike through ancient forests and along cliffs where Cape Barren geese graze fearlessly.
- Admirals Arch – A dramatic natural archway where New Zealand fur seals play in the swirling waters below. The boardwalk provides front-row views.
- Snelling Beach – A pristine white-sand beach perfect for a rest, with crystal-clear waters and abundant birdlife.
- Wildlife Encounters – Spot kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and even the elusive Kangaroo Island dunnart. Keep an eye out for sea eagles soaring overhead.
- Kelly Hill Caves – A detour into these limestone caves reveals stunning stalactites and a fascinating underground world.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the trail in 5 days and 4 nights at a comfortable pace. This allows time to fully absorb the landscapes, take photos, and enjoy the huts’ basic but cosy accommodations. You can also do a shorter 3-day version by skipping some sections, but the full experience is best. Plan to start early each day – the midday sun can be intense – and always carry plenty of water and sun protection. The trail is well-marked, so navigation is straightforward.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Seal Bay Conservation Park – Just a short drive away, you can join a guided walk among a colony of Australian sea lions lounging on the sand.
- Vivonne Bay – Often called one of Australia’s best beaches, its turquoise waters and white sand are perfect for a post-hike swim.
- Penneshaw – The island’s main ferry town, with penguin tours at dusk and excellent local seafood.
- Kingscote – The largest town, offering supplies, bakeries, and the Kangaroo Island Spirits distillery for a gin tasting.
- Little Sahara – A surprising expanse of white sand dunes where you can try sandboarding or simply enjoy the view.
