Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, descending from the Southern Alps almost to sea level. Unlike its more famous neighbor Franz Josef, Fox Glacier feels quieter and more raw, with a remote, frontier atmosphere. The tiny settlement of Fox Glacier village offers a handful of lodges, cafés, and guiding companies, all centered around the glacier experience. Whether you hike to the terminal face, take a heli-hike, or simply admire the ice from a distance, the sheer scale and constant movement of the glacier is unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Fox Glacier. Arrive early to do the terminal face walk in the morning (allow 1.5 hours), then book a heli-hike for midday or afternoon (allow 3–4 hours total). If you're not doing a heli-hike, add Lake Matheson and Gillespies Beach to fill the day. Two nights is ideal if you want to do both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, or if you're a keen photographer chasing light on Lake Matheson.
