Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, descending from the Southern Alps almost to sea level. Unlike its more famous neighbor Franz Josef, Fox Glacier feels quieter and more raw, with a remote, frontier atmosphere. The tiny settlement of Fox Glacier village offers a handful of lodges, cafés, and guiding companies, all centered around the glacier experience. Whether you hike to the terminal face, take a heli-hike, or simply admire the ice from a distance, the sheer scale and constant movement of the glacier is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Fox Glacier Terminal Face Walk – A 2.5 km (1.5 mi) return walk from the car park leads to the closest safe viewpoint of the glacier's terminal face. The track crosses a rocky moraine and offers spectacular views of the ice wall and surrounding peaks.
- Heli-Hike – The best way to experience the glacier up close. A short helicopter flight lands you on the ice, where you can walk among crevasses, ice caves, and seracs with a guide. Book ahead in peak season.
- Lake Matheson – Just 6 km (4 mi) from the village, this mirror-still lake offers classic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The easy 2.6 km (1.6 mi) loop walk is best at sunrise or sunset.
- Gillespies Beach – A 20-minute drive west leads to a wild black-sand beach with a historic gold-mining settlement. It's a great spot for sunset and seal spotting.
- Chalet Lookout – A short, steep walk above the village rewards with panoramic views across the glacier valley to the Tasman Sea.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Fox Glacier. Arrive early to do the terminal face walk in the morning (allow 1.5 hours), then book a heli-hike for midday or afternoon (allow 3–4 hours total). If you're not doing a heli-hike, add Lake Matheson and Gillespies Beach to fill the day. Two nights is ideal if you want to do both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, or if you're a keen photographer chasing light on Lake Matheson.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Okarito Lagoon – A 30-minute drive north of Franz Josef, this coastal lagoon is a birdwatcher's paradise, with kayaking and a short walk to a lookout tower.
- Haast Pass – Drive 45 minutes south to the start of the Haast Pass Highway, a scenic route through rainforest and waterfalls leading to Wanaka and Queenstown.
- Whataroa – A small town 30 minutes north, home to the White Heron Sanctuary Tours (seasonal) and a good lunch stop.
- Ship Creek – A 15-minute drive south of Fox Glacier, this short walk through dune forest leads to a wild beach and a historic tramway.
