Haast Pass is one of New Zealand's most dramatic mountain passes, carrying the highway through the Southern Alps between the West Coast and Central Otago. This road is a journey in itself, winding through ancient rainforest, past thundering waterfalls and alongside turquoise rivers. It's a must-drive for anyone exploring the South Island, offering a raw, wild beauty that epitomises the country's untamed landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Fantail Falls – A short walk leads to a delicate fan-shaped waterfall cascading over schist rock; perfect for a quick leg-stretch and photo stop.
- Thunder Creek Falls – A powerful 28-metre drop just off the highway, easily accessible via a short path through lush beech forest.
- Blue Pools – Crystal-clear, vividly blue waters fed by the Makarora River. Cross the swing bridge for a classic Kiwi swimming spot (chilly but invigorating).
- Haast Pass Lookout – A short, steep climb rewards with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, especially stunning in late afternoon light.
- The Gates of Haast – Where the Haast River narrows into a dramatic gorge; watch the turquoise water surge through rock walls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Driving the full length of Haast Pass (from the West Coast to Wanaka or vice versa) takes about 1.5–2 hours without stops, but allow at least half a day to explore the walks and viewpoints. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover on the pass, and pack a picnic – there are several scenic spots along the way. If you're driving a campervan, note that some sections are narrow and winding; take it slow and use the pull-off bays to let faster traffic pass.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka – 60 km east of the pass, a vibrant lakeside town with excellent cafés, hiking trails, and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers – West of the pass, these iconic glaciers offer guided walks and heli-hikes; a dramatic contrast to the pass's forested slopes.
- Lake Matheson – Near Fox Glacier, known for mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook; a short loop walk through ancient kahikatea forest.
- Haast Township – A small settlement at the western end of the pass, with a quirky salmon farm, a pub, and access to the Haast River Safari jet boat rides.
- Makarora – A tiny hamlet just east of the pass, offering a general store, basic accommodation, and a starting point for the Young River Track.
