Okarito is a tiny, sleepy coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, famous for its pristine lagoon, wild beaches, and as the best place in the country to see the rare white heron (kotuku). With a population of just 30, this is a place to disconnect, breathe in the salt air, and immerse yourself in untouched nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Okarito Lagoon – Paddle a kayak or join a guided boat tour on this tranquil, bird-filled lagoon. It's the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand and a birdwatcher’s paradise, with royal spoonbills, black swans, and the highlight: the kotuku (white heron) breeding colony (seasonal access).
- Okarito Trig Walk – A steep but rewarding 1.5-hour return hike through lush rainforest to a lookout with panoramic views over the lagoon, the Southern Alps, and the Tasman Sea. Best at sunset.
- Three Mile Lagoon Walk – A flat, easy stroll along the beach and through coastal forest, perfect for spotting seabirds and the occasional seal.
- Okarito Beach – Wild and windswept, this vast stretch of sand is great for a solitary walk. Swim with caution – the surf is strong and unpredictable.
- Okarito Kiwi Tours – Join a night tour to hear and possibly see the rare Okarito brown kiwi (rowi) in its natural habitat. Only 400 remain in the wild.
Suggested Time to Spend
Okarito is a half-day to full-day stop. Most visitors arrive in the morning, kayak the lagoon, do the Trig walk, and leave by late afternoon. If you're a keen birder or want to do a kiwi tour, stay overnight – there's a handful of basic lodges and a campsite. Two days allows a relaxed pace: one day on the water, the next exploring the walks and beach.
