Okarito is a tiny, sleepy coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, famous for its pristine lagoon, wild beaches, and as the best place in the country to see the rare white heron (kotuku). With a population of just 30, this is a place to disconnect, breathe in the salt air, and immerse yourself in untouched nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Okarito is a half-day to full-day stop. Most visitors arrive in the morning, kayak the lagoon, do the Trig walk, and leave by late afternoon. If you're a keen birder or want to do a kiwi tour, stay overnight – there's a handful of basic lodges and a campsite. Two days allows a relaxed pace: one day on the water, the next exploring the walks and beach.
