Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 300 metres above sea level. The sheer scale of the ice — a 12-kilometre tongue of ancient frozen water — is breathtaking, and the ever-changing face of the glacier means no two visits are the same. The small, laid-back township of Franz Josef provides a perfect base, with a friendly pub, a handful of excellent cafés, and a strong Māori cultural presence (the glacier is known as Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere — the tears of the avalanche girl). Whether you're here for a heli-hike, a guided ice walk, or simply to soak in the views from the valley floor, this is an essential stop on any West Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Glacier Walks: Strap on crampons and follow a guide onto the lower ice, where you'll navigate crevasses, ice tunnels, and surreal blue pools. The guided walk is the only way to safely step onto the glacier itself.
- Heli-Hike: A helicopter flight onto the upper glacier offers jaw-dropping aerial views and gives you access to pristine ice formations far above the valley. This is the ultimate experience for adventure seekers.
- Sentinel Rock Walk: A short, family-friendly track that climbs through rainforest to a viewpoint overlooking the glacier terminal face. It's a great option if you're short on time or travelling with kids.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: Home to the only captive breeding programme for the rare rowi kiwi, this centre offers a chance to see New Zealand's iconic bird up close and learn about conservation efforts.
- Lake Matheson: A short drive south, this mirror-still lake offers classic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman — especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night in Franz Josef. Arrive in the late afternoon, take the Sentinel Rock Walk for a warm-up, then book a guided glacier walk or heli-hike for the next morning. If you're combining it with Fox Glacier (30 minutes south), allow two days to explore both glaciers thoroughly. The valley floor walkways are quick (30–60 minutes), but the full guided experiences take 3–4 hours, so plan accordingly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Smaller and less commercial than Franz Josef, Fox Glacier offers a more intimate glacier experience and excellent guided walks.
- Lake Matheson: Famous for its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook, this is an easy detour on the way to or from Fox Glacier.
- Whataroa: A tiny settlement north of Franz Josef, known for the White Heron Sanctuary Tours — a chance to see kotuku (white herons) at their only New Zealand breeding colony.
- Okarito: A peaceful coastal village with a beautiful lagoon, kayaking, and the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary. It's a great spot for birdwatching and a quiet overnight.
- Hokitika: A 90-minute drive north, this artsy town is famous for pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge's turquoise waters.
