Discovery Bay is a serene coastal village on the far south coast of New South Wales, just a few kilometres north of the Victorian border. With its long, sweeping beach, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, it's the kind of place where you can kick off your shoes and feel the salt on your skin. The bay is part of the stunning Sapphire Coast, known for its pristine beaches, national parks, and abundant wildlife. Whether you're a surfer, a family looking for a safe swimming spot, or a nature lover keen to explore the bush, Discovery Bay offers a genuine slice of coastal Australia without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Discovery Bay Beach – A long stretch of golden sand perfect for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The southern end is patrolled in summer, and the waves are consistent enough for board riders.
- Nadgee Nature Reserve – Just south of the bay, this pristine reserve protects coastal heath, wetlands, and birdlife. Walk the short tracks to hidden beaches or spot kangaroos at dusk.
- Bournda National Park – A short drive north, this park offers excellent walking trails through coastal forest to secluded beaches like Bournda Beach and the iconic Wallagoot Lake.
- Merimbula Lake – Ten minutes north, this large estuary is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The boardwalk along the lake is great for birdwatching.
- Tathra Wharf – A historic timber wharf and a great spot for a coffee or fish and chips while watching the fishing boats come in.
Suggested Time to Spend
Discovery Bay itself is compact, so you can soak up the beach and village vibe in a day or two. However, to fully explore the surrounding national parks and nearby towns, plan for at least three to four days. Base yourself here and take day trips north to Merimbula and Tathra, or south into Victoria's Croajingolong National Park. The area rewards a slower pace – allow time for spontaneous beach stops and bushwalks.
