Nadgee Nature Reserve
Nadgee Nature Reserve is a wild, remote coastal wilderness on the far south coast of New South Wales, just north of the Victorian border. This untouched expanse of heathland, freshwater lagoons, and surf-beaten beaches is a haven for serious bushwalkers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving solitude. With no vehicle access beyond the entrance, Nadgee demands self-reliance—but rewards with some of the most pristine and empty coastline in the state.
Highlights & What to See
- Nadgee Beach & Lagoon – A magnificent, undeveloped beach backed by a large lagoon; perfect for birdwatching and spotting kangaroos at dawn.
- Coastal Walking Track – A multi-day hike (about 25 km) from the reserve entrance to Disaster Bay, passing through heathland, over headlands, and along cliffs with views of migrating whales (May–November).
- Birdlife – Over 160 species recorded, including the endangered eastern ground parrot and pied oystercatchers; the lagoons are a hotspot for waterfowl.
- Merrica River – A tidal estuary on the reserve’s southern boundary; great for fishing and canoeing.
- Disaster Bay – A remote, picturesque bay just south of the reserve, accessible via the walking track; offers a true sense of isolation.
- Wildflowers – Spring brings spectacular displays of native flowers, including banksias, orchids, and heath.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day walk (4–6 hours), but the full coastal track is best done as a 2–3 day backpacking trip, with camping at designated sites. Because the reserve is remote and has no facilities, plan carefully—bring all food, water, and a tent if overnighting. A long weekend allows a relaxed traverse, with time to explore the lagoons and beaches.
