Owen Springs Reserve is a sprawling 1,300-square-kilometre working cattle station turned conservation reserve, just 80 kilometres west of Alice Springs. This rugged slice of Central Australia offers a raw, off-the-beaten-path experience where you can explore historic homestead ruins, dramatic red-rock gorges, and seasonal wildflower displays. It's a place for self-sufficient travellers who love solitude, birdwatching, and the authentic outback landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Owen Springs Homestead – Explore the ruins of the original 1870s homestead and outbuildings, offering a glimpse into the tough early pastoral life.
- Hugh River Gorge – A scenic spot for a short walk or picnic, with towering red cliffs and cool waterholes after rain.
- Wildflowers and Birdlife – After good rains, the reserve bursts into colour with Sturt's desert peas and everlastings. Keep an eye out for red-tailed black cockatoos and zebra finches.
- 4WD Tracks – The reserve has several unsealed tracks that lead to remote campsites and lookouts, perfect for a self-drive adventure.
- Larapinta Drive Scenic Drive – The approach to Owen Springs along Larapinta Drive is a journey in itself, with sweeping views of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day driving through the reserve, stopping at the homestead and Hugh River Gorge. However, if you have a 4WD and want to camp, allow at least one full day and an overnight stay to explore the more remote tracks and soak up the silence. The reserve is best visited between April and October when temperatures are milder.
