Rising like a rust-red fortress from the desert, King's Canyon delivers one of the Red Centre's most dramatic day walks. This ancient gorge, carved over 400 million years, offers sheer sandstone cliffs, palm-filled crevices, and a stunning natural amphitheatre known as the Garden of Eden. It's a must-do for any traveller venturing between Uluru and Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Rim Walk: The classic 6km loop along the canyon edge rewards with jaw-dropping views into the chasm and across the surrounding desert. Allow 3–4 hours.
- Garden of Eden: A permanent waterhole surrounded by cycads and ferns – a surprising oasis in the arid landscape. It's a serene spot for a break.
- Lost City: A maze of weathered sandstone domes that resemble an ancient settlement. Best seen in the soft light of early morning.
- Kings Creek Walk: A shorter, easier 2.6km return trail along the canyon floor, ideal for those wanting a less strenuous experience.
- Sunrise & Sunset: The canyon walls ignite in shades of ochre and crimson at dawn and dusk – prime photo opportunities from the car park lookout.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to King's Canyon. Start early (around 6am) to beat the heat and enjoy the best light on the Rim Walk. If you're short on time, the Kings Creek Walk can be done in under an hour. Overnight stays at Kings Canyon Resort allow you to experience sunset and sunrise without a rush.
