Watarrka

Watarrka, the Aboriginal name for the region better known as Kings Canyon, is a spectacular chasm carved into the red sandstone of the George Gill Range. This is the heart of the Northern Territory's Red Centre, where sheer 100-metre cliffs plunge into a lush palm-filled gorge. The silence is profound, broken only by the call of a zebra finch or the whisper of the desert wind. For travellers on a self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Uluru, Watarrka is the essential pit stop that delivers some of the most dramatic walking in the outback.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers allocate a full day to Watarrka. If you're driving from Alice Springs (about 3.5 hours), arrive the previous evening, then tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk at dawn. The walk takes 3–4 hours. Spend the afternoon on the Kathleen Springs Walk or a scenic flight. If you're short on time, a half-day is enough for the rim walk and a quick look at the canyon from the lookout. Overnight stays are recommended at Kings Canyon Resort or Kings Creek Station, both offering accommodation and camping.
