Rising abruptly from the red desert plains of Watarrka National Park, the George Gill Range is a striking sandstone escarpment etched with ancient gorges and permanent waterholes. This dramatic landscape, part of the traditional country of the Luritja people, offers some of the most rewarding walks in the Red Centre, where cool rock pools and ghost gums contrast with the arid surrounds. For self-drive travellers, the range is a natural extension of a Kings Canyon itinerary, providing a quieter, more intimate outback experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The undisputed highlight – a 6km loop that climbs to the top of the canyon for breathtaking views over the George Gill Range, the weathered domes of the Lost City, and the lush Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Kings Creek Walk: A gentler 2.6km return stroll along the canyon floor, following a shaded creek bed to a viewing platform with sheer cliff faces rising above.
- Kathleen Springs Walk: A short, wheelchair-accessible 2.6km return trail that leads to a serene spring-fed waterhole, a significant cultural site for the Luritja people.
- Sunset Viewing at the Range: Watch the sandstone cliffs ignite in shades of ochre and crimson as the sun sinks below the horizon – best enjoyed from the Kings Canyon Resort lookout.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, peregrine falcons, and the iconic red kangaroo near waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to explore the George Gill Range properly. Most visitors arrive early to tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk before the heat (allow 3–4 hours), then enjoy a picnic lunch at the canyon carpark. The shorter walks can be done in the late afternoon, followed by sunset drinks at the resort. If you're self-driving from Alice Springs (about 3 hours), consider staying overnight at Kings Canyon Resort or the nearby Kings Creek Station to break up the journey.
