Ayers Rock Resort is the main accommodation and dining hub for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, offering a range of lodgings from camping to luxury hotels. It's a self-contained oasis in the Red Centre, designed to blend with the desert landscape. The resort provides easy access to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), and is the base for exploring the region's ancient culture and striking outback scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru at Sunrise & Sunset – Watch the iconic monolith shift through fiery colours from designated viewing areas; the changing light is unforgettable.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – A series of 36 domed rock formations; hike the Valley of the Winds for sweeping views and a sense of ancient power.
- Field of Light – Bruce Munro's stunning installation of 50,000 solar-powered spheres illuminates the desert after dusk – book ahead.
- Cultural Centre & Guided Walks – Learn about Anangu culture and the Tjukurpa (creation stories) through ranger talks and Aboriginal-led tours.
- Wintjiri Arts & Museum – Showcasing local Indigenous art and artefacts, with a focus on the region's living culture.
- Desert Gardens & Pool – The resort itself offers landscaped gardens, swimming pools, and walking trails for a relaxing break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3 nights to fully experience Uluru and Kata Tjuta. This allows for a sunrise and sunset at Uluru, a full day exploring Kata Tjuta (including the Valley of the Winds walk), and time for the Field of Light or a cultural tour. If you're short on time, 2 nights can work, but you'll need to prioritise – aim for one sunrise at Uluru and one afternoon at Kata Tjuta. The resort itself is compact, so you won't waste time on transfers.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – About a 3-hour drive away, this offers the spectacular Rim Walk and is often combined with Uluru on a Red Centre road trip.
- Alice Springs – A 4.5-hour drive north, it's the gateway to the West MacDonnell Ranges and a good stopover en route from Darwin or Adelaide.
- Mount Conner (Attila) – A flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance; worth a photo stop.
- Curtin Springs Station – A working cattle station offering a taste of outback life, with camping and a rustic pub, about 1.5 hours from the resort.
