Just 4 km north of Alice Springs, the Telegraph Station is where the town was born. This historic reserve preserves the stone buildings of the original Overland Telegraph Line repeater station, established in 1872. It’s a fascinating step back into the frontier era, with the arid landscape and the usually dry Todd River providing a dramatic backdrop. The site is also a popular spot for swimming in the waterholes and picnicking under the river red gums.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–2 hours to tour the buildings and stroll the grounds. If you plan to swim or picnic, budget half a day. The site is open daily and is best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. It’s an easy add-on to any Alice Springs itinerary.
