Hidden along the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges, the Ochre Pits are a sacred Aboriginal site where generations have mined vibrant ochre for ceremony, art, and trade. The cliffs here are layered with red, orange, yellow, and white pigments, creating a natural gallery that feels both ancient and alive. It’s a place to walk quietly, absorb the colours, and reflect on the deep cultural significance of the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Sacred ochre deposits – The soft, crumbly cliffs reveal bands of ochre that have been used for thousands of years. You can still see the hand-grinding grooves on the rock.
- Interpretive walk – A short, easy boardwalk leads to viewing platforms with signs explaining the cultural and geological story. No touching or collecting ochre is allowed.
- Stunning desert colours – The contrast of the ochre cliffs against the blue sky and spinifex is mesmerising, especially in the late afternoon light.
- Larapinta Trail section – This is a popular stop for hikers on the Larapinta Trail; you might spot walkers resting in the shade of the ghost gums.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour to walk the boardwalk, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere. The site is small but profound – it’s best visited as part of a half-day or full-day drive along the West MacDonnell Ranges. Combine it with a picnic at a nearby gorge or a sunrise stop for the softest light.
