Ndhala Gorge
Ndhala Gorge is a hidden gem in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering a quieter alternative to more famous gorges. This ancient waterhole, surrounded by rugged ochre cliffs, is a sacred site for the Arrernte people and a haven for birdlife. The short walk to the gorge is a journey through a dramatic landscape of weathered rock and ghost gums, culminating in a tranquil pool that invites contemplation.
Highlights & What to See
- Sacred Waterhole: The permanent waterhole at the gorge is a spiritual site; take time to absorb the serene atmosphere and watch for bird species like the zebra finch and crimson chat.
- Walking Trail: A 1.5 km return walk follows a dry creek bed, passing through a narrow cleft in the cliffs. The trail is easy but requires some scrambling over rocks.
- Ancient Cycads: Look for the rare MacDonnell Ranges cycad, a living fossil that has survived for millions of years, clinging to the gorge walls.
- Aboriginal Rock Art: Keep an eye out for faint engravings and grinding grooves on the rocks, evidence of long-standing Indigenous use.
- Photography: The late afternoon light paints the gorge walls in fiery hues, making it a prime spot for landscape photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the walk and time to sit by the waterhole. Most visitors combine Ndhala with nearby gorges in a half-day loop from Alice Springs. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light and cooler temperatures.
