Katherine, the fourth-largest town in the Northern Territory, serves as the gateway to the spectacular Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River over millennia. This is a place of immense scale and ancient beauty, where the red cliffs plunge into deep, dark water, and the landscape shifts from lush riverine forests to arid savannah. It’s a must-stop on any Top End road trip, offering a profound sense of the Outback's raw, timeless power.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise: The quintessential experience. A guided boat tour takes you through the first two or three gorges, revealing towering cliffs, Aboriginal rock art, and the chance to spot freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks. Opt for a sunrise or sunset cruise for the most dramatic light.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A series of stunning plunge pools and waterfalls about 40km north of Katherine. The main swimming hole is perfect for a refreshing dip, and the short walk to the upper pools offers panoramic views over the escarpment.
- Nitmiluk Gorge Canoeing: For a more active adventure, rent a canoe and paddle through the gorges at your own pace. You can camp overnight on designated sandbars (permit required), making it a true wilderness experience.
- Katherine Outback Heritage Museum: Housed in a historic railway station, this museum offers a fascinating insight into the region’s Indigenous culture, pastoral history, and the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line.
- Springvale Homestead: One of the Northern Territory's oldest homesteads, dating from 1879. You can explore the grounds and history, or enjoy a cold beer at the atmospheric bar.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend two nights in Katherine, which allows for a full day exploring Nitmiluk Gorge and a morning at Edith Falls. If you’re short on time, a single day can cover the main gorge cruise and a quick dip at Edith Falls, but you’ll feel rushed. For serious hikers or canoeists, three nights opens up the longer gorge walks and overnight paddling trips.
