Imagine slipping into a warm, crystal-clear pool surrounded by towering palm trees and paperbarks, the water a constant 34°C—this is Mataranka Thermal Pools. Tucked away in Elsey National Park, about 100 km south of Katherine, these natural springs are a quintessential outback oasis. The water, filtered through ancient limestone, has a faint tea-tree hue and a silky feel, making it utterly irresistible after a long drive. Locals and travellers alike come to float, swim, and soak in the healing waters, while the surrounding bushland echoes with bird calls. It's a place to slow down, breathe, and let the warmth seep into your bones.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs – A short walk from the main pool, this smaller, more natural spring offers a gentle current you can float along. It's less crowded and equally warm, with overhanging trees creating dappled shade.
- Rainbow Spring (the main pool) – The larger, more developed thermal pool with a sandy bottom, perfect for swimming laps or simply bobbing around. The surrounding lawns and picnic tables make it a great spot for a relaxed afternoon.
- Elsey National Park walks – After your soak, explore the park's short trails, including the 1.2 km Waterhouse Walk through monsoon forest, where you might spot wallabies and colourful birds.
- Mataranka Homestead – A historic station turned accommodation and camping ground, with a bar and restaurant serving cold beer and pub grub. It's a classic outback stopover.
- Stockyard Gallery – A quirky art gallery and café in the nearby town, showcasing local Aboriginal art and crafts, plus homemade damper and jam.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day at the thermal pools. Arrive early (before 10 am) to beat the crowds and enjoy the peaceful morning light. If you're self-driving, consider an overnight stay at Mataranka Homestead or the nearby caravan park to fully unwind. A couple of hours is enough for a quick dip and a walk, but you'll likely want to linger—the water is that inviting.
