Forget the red dust of the Centre for a moment – Auburn, a tiny outpost on the Lasseter Highway, is your gateway to the raw, silent beauty of the western MacDonnell Ranges. This is not a town with shops and cafes; it's a place to fill your water tanks, check your tyre pressure, and feel the immense quiet before you plunge into the ochre canyons and ancient gorges that define this part of the Red Centre. The real attraction here is the landscape that begins just beyond the roadhouse.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park): A 4WD-only oasis of relict palms and permanent waterholes, this is one of the Territory's most magical spots. The drive in is an adventure in itself, crossing the Finke River bed multiple times.
- Ochre Pits: A sacred Aboriginal site where layers of ochre – white, yellow, and red – have been mined for millennia. The colours are stunning in the afternoon light, and the interpretive signs explain the cultural significance.
- Standley Chasm: A spectacular narrow chasm that slices through the West MacDonnell Ranges. For the best photo opportunity, time your visit for midday when the sun beams directly onto the red walls.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: A deep, permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim on a hot day. The surrounding red cliffs and gum trees make it a classic outback swimming spot.
- Serpentine Gorge: A shorter walk leads to a lookout over a winding gorge. It's less crowded than some other spots, offering a peaceful place to soak in the ancient geology.
Suggested Time to Spend
Base yourself in or near Auburn for at least two full days. Day one: tackle the 4WD track to Palm Valley (allow a full day, including time to walk the Mpaara Loop). Day two: explore the western gorges of the West MacDonnell Ranges – hit Standley Chasm early, then Ellery Creek for a swim, and finish at the Ochre Pits as the light softens. If you're towing a caravan, note that Palm Valley is strictly high-clearance 4WD only; you may need to leave the van at the roadhouse or a nearby campground.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The hub of the Red Centre, 130 km east, for supplies, culture, and the famous Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A dramatic sandstone canyon with the iconic Rim Walk, about 300 km southwest via the Luritja Road.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: The big one – 450 km southwest. Combine Auburn with a trip to the Rock for the ultimate Central Australia itinerary.
- West MacDonnell Ranges (eastern section): Don't miss Simpsons Gap, Emily Gap, and the John Flynn's Grave Historical Reserve on your way to or from Alice Springs.
- Finke Gorge National Park (Palm Valley): Already mentioned, but worth repeating – it's the main reason to stop at Auburn.
